MAHAL
Oct 29 - Nov 4Opening reception October 28, 2011 / 7:30 - 11 pmNovember 1 / 3:00 - 7:00pmNovember 2 / 4:00 - 7:00pm
Francisco Fernando Granados, Spencer Ocampo, Reva Diana, Roberto Jamora, Michael Africa, Edsel Chua, Kim Vigilante, Chaya Go, Patrick Cruz and a group film by Docot, Walde & Smartt.
In his book White Love, vicente l. rafael considers the tagalog word “mahal” as a translation for the word “love”. it refers to that which is dear, but also means valuable and expensive. Rafael writes that such ambiguities express love as a promise of fulfilment — and a costly one.
MAHAL explores the desires which carry the filipino/a across borders.

http://qruopenschool.ca/ QR_U ~ questions, responses & unofficial conversations (an open school) - exhibition project at Emily Carr University, Dec 1-10; Twitter: @qr_u (hashtag #QR_U)

QR_U (an open school) is an interactive exhibition project concerning art, design, pedagogy, and technology presented by Elisa Yon, Adam Stenhouse, Heidi May, and Lois Klassen. QR_U aims to create an occasion and a setting for the broad questions surrounding our relationship with the arts and pedagogy, and the future of the art school. This exhibition project forms a ten-day school-within-a-school and is dependent on the current culture of exchange and dialogue at Emily Carr University. It aims to make visible the inside of the school and to distribute that school and its inquiry freely and widely.Working alongside the themes of the ELIA Leadership Symposium (http://www.ecuad.ca/elia), this exhibition will function as a process of collective inquiry, consisting of dialogue and interactions in response to questions and materials that connect to three main concerns:1) WHAT is the new school of arts?2) WHERE does learning happen?3) HOW can we learn to learn? The exhibition presents opportunities for members of the university community to locate the dialogue within a local context by way of its open classroom spaces, open websites, and an evolving virtual archive. This project challenges the traditional notion of an exhibition by attempting to produce a dialogical and networked space of relational learning. Exhibition events will intentionally blur the lines between art and pedagogy, with the understanding that by exploring the space in between these two areas, new ideas might emerge. Website > http://qruopenschool.ca/Twitter @qr_u > http://twitter.com/qr_uQR_U (an open school) takes place December 1-10, 2011

Collage Drop Outs

Collage Drop OutsArrange, assemble, collect, choose, construct, collide, cut & paste, intervene, invade, juxtapose, jumble up, rip, remix, tear, trim assorted found materials and readymades. This is a show about departures from collage, involving artists with certain sensitivity towards material. While collage was a strategy for destabilizing systems and conventions, its aesthetics seem more de rigueur than radical in our visual landscapes. Pasts are constantly recycled, conflicting cultures collide visually and spatially, and the collage cunning of displacement and disruption seems to have lost its point. An almost unlimited storehouse of image and sound resources is instantly accessible for sampling and consuming in the digital age, where private and public merge, and copyright becomes an increasingly testy and confusing issue. Is there now scope for the spirit of counterculture to operate, and for the aesthetics and process of collage to be meaningful? Does borrowing, or the sometimes preferred term, stealing, yield any more creative innovation or insights? Wherefore is one a collage artist? Here, we explore orthodox and less orthodox tangents from collage in theme, imagery, style and material. Circling the tangle between the crisis of collage and the drive to keep making and remaking the world from the scraps of human culture, we take a stab at widening interpretations of and evaluating collage’s bleed into contemporary artistic practices, somewhere between collage’s more traditional definitions as a medium-based category and how, in principle, everything today can be seen as collage. -Isabel Ching

Patrick Cruz: Yin Yang TempleOctober 22 to November 30, 2011Opening Friday, October 21, 8pmGallery hours noon to 5pm Wednesday to SaturdayIn the first of the Ill Repute series of projects commissioned from emerging artists, Patrick Cruz has created Yin Yang Temple.Part installation, part media project, and part social network, Yin Yang Temple builds on Unit/Pitt’s early history as a focal point for art and music, and for musical subcultures intersecting with visual art audiences. Cruz has invited other artists to create playlists which play off both the installation context and the Pitt’s history of fractious interaction with the wider society around it, through its on-again, off-again relationships with activists, experimental artists, urban cultures of resistance and DIY culture-makers.The installation and listening station is accessible during regular open hours at 15 East Pender Street, noon to five Wednesday through Saturday; playlists will also be available through UNIT/PITT Radio around the clock, every day of the week.Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, Patrick Cruz is a Filipino-Canadian multidisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, BC. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2010.Yin Yang Temple is part of the UNIT/PITT series Ill Repute, a Vancouver 125 project exploring the wrong end of history, as viewed through the lens of the Pitt’s 36-year existence. UNIT/PITT Projects gratefully acknowledges the support of the City of Vancouver, the British Columbia Arts Council, the Canada Council, and the support of our donors, members, volunteers and of our community of artists and cultural workers.
